There are two related ways of modeling the formation of steady and dynamic patterns (waves) on cell membranes. The first is often called mechano-chemistry and couples mechanical equations for the membranes of closed vesicles with reaction-diffusion systems on the membrane and possibly also in the interior of the vesicle. In these, the membrane is usually taken to be inextensible, yielding an area constraint, and sometimes there is an additional volume constraint.
On a more phenomenological level, pattern formation on cell membranes is often modeled as reaction-diffusion systems with some conservation laws.
The aim of this minisymposium is to bring together experts from different fields working on pattern formation with constraints, including geometric flows, and experiments.
